LI-LING LIAO, VIOLIN

Li-Ling Liao was born in Taipei, Taiwan. 

Ms. Liao attended Ecole d'Humanite in Switzerland at the age of sixteen and also studied violin with Daniel Dodds at the Lucerne Conservatory.  Ms. Liao then went to North America and studied violin with Lynn Chang at the Boston Conservatory, as well as violin and chamber music studies with Eric Rosenblith and James Buswell IV at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.  Ms. Liao recently completed her studies at the University of Maryland, receiving her Doctoral of Musical Arts degree under the tutelage of Dr. James Stern.

Ms. Liao has been invited frequently to perform as a soloist and a chamber player in North America and Asia.  Since moving to the Vancouver area, Ms. Liao has played with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra , the  North Shore Sinfonia and  is currently associate concertmaster of the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra and  a member of the Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra and the Pacific Rim String Quartet.  Ms. Liao is a faculty at the Vancouver Academy of Music.

RUTH HUANG, VIOLIN

Originally from Taiwan, Ruth started her music journey first as a pianist then as a violinist at age five. She came to Canada shortly afterwards to continue her studies. Among her teachers are Robert Davidovici, Andrew Dawes and Nancy Di Novo.

Ruth Huang graduated from University of British Columbia in 2003 with a Master's Degree in Violin Performance, being the top string player and a numerous scholarships recipient, such as Dr. and Mrs. A. M. Bomstead scholarship in Violin (2000,2002) and others. As a performer, Ruth hasplayed in numerous orchestras and chamber ensembles, winning several awards
and recognitions at the Kiwanis Festival and Friends of Chamber Music Competition. Ruth is currently a member of Sinfonia Mosaic and directs a private violin studio in Vancouver.

BRIAN MIX, CELLO

Brian Mix has been active as a freelance cellist in Vancouver since 1992. He frequently performs with the Vancouver Symphony and CBC Radio Orchestra, has played with Vancouver Opera and the National Ballet, and often collaborates in chamber music with many other Vancouver musicians. He has recorded for CBC, numerous film soundtracks, and CDs of pop, rock, folk, and children’s artists. Alongside performing, Brian writes program notes for the Vancouver Recital Society, gives pre-concert talks, conducts, and teaches.

Brian studied at the University of British Columbia with Eric Wilson (receiving B.Mus. and M.Mus. degrees), the National Arts Centre in Ottawa with Donald Whitton, the University of Cincinnati with Hans Jensen, and at the Banff Centre.

Other musicians with whom Brian has studied include Antonio Meneses, Antonio Lysy, Tom Rolston, Gilbert Kalish, Rena Sharon, and Jane Coop; and on baroque cello, Phoebe Carrai, Jaap ter Linden, Reinhard Goebel, Jacques Ogg, Wilbert Hazelzet, Monica Huggett, and Marc Destrubé.

Brian is married to a pianist, Brenda Campbell, and has two young children. 


ROBIN STREB, VIOLA

Robin Streb earned her BMus. From the University of Victoria, and her MMus. from Rice University in Houston, TX.  She has studied chamber music with the Lafayette String Quartet, Yariv Aloni, and James Dunham and Paul Katz of the Cleveland Quartet, among others.  Robin has an active performing career and has appeared with many ensembles in and around Vancouver including the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, North Shore Sinfonia, the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, and the Victoria Symphony.  Robin is a dedicated performer of new music, presenting new and experimental works locally for the Sonic Boom festival, Redshift Music, and Ensemble Sisyphe.  She has also performed in Los Angeles, New York, and Europe as a soloist as well as with her chamber ensembles Suna no onna and Park Lane.  In addition to her performing schedule, Robin teaches privately and at the Vancouver Waldorf School.
